Sarah Smith Elementary Featured In International Baccalaureate’s ‘09 – ‘10 Sourcebook

One top District 4 elementary school, Sarah Smith Elementary, was featured in IB’s 2009 – 2010 Sourcebook.  The International Baccalaureate Organization features three programmes that focus on the development of “intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills” where students will leave well-prepared citizens of the world.  Sarah Smith participates in the IBO’s Primary Years Programme, or PYP.  The school was featured in the Sourcebook for its outstanding use of Junior Greatbooks and Shared Inquiry, and was called a “model PYP school” by the IBO.  The implementation of the Junior Greatbooks program has allowed Sarah Smith students to become more advanced thinkers, readers, and writers.

Unfortunately, the IB-PYP isn't a good program for higher achieving students. IB-PYP strongly discourages the use of streaming and setting, two popular methods of ability grouping. (I prefer setting, which ability-groups by subject, so a child who is stronger in language arts than math can be placed in a high performing language class, while she can be in the medium-high level math class.)

Discouraging high achievement is policy in the IB-PYP. The ban on streaming and setting appears right in the 2009 PYP Coordinators Handbook. Ability grouping "is not supported by the PYP understanding of inclusion." Parents should ask if students will be taught above grade-level in the PYP. Insist on an answer. School administrators will try to confuse the issue by saying IB-PYP goes into more depth or some such nonsense. Ask again if high achievers will be taught above grade-level. Keep asking until you get an answer. Then make sure you don't enroll your kid in an IB-PYP school.
